The Nuclear Safety and Security Centre (NSSC) is one of the Centres of the Radiation Protection Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. The Centre is involved in research in the areas of nuclear safety and security and has the capacity to carry out technical services and consultancy in education and training in nuclear safety and security, radiological safety assessments and quality assurance audits, physical protection at facilities, threat assessment, and mitigation, basic radioactive contamination investigation, nuclear security system design and analysis.
Staff
The Centre has five highly skilled and competent scientific staff with one (1) Principal Research Scientist and four (4) Assistant Research Scientists.
Activities of the Centre
The Centre carries out technical services and consultancy in
- education and training in nuclear safety and security,
- radiological safety assessments and quality assurance audits,
- physical protection at facilities,
- threat assessment and mitigation,
- basic radioactive contamination investigation,
- nuclear security system design and analysis, and
- emergency planning, preparedness and response.
Ongoing Projects
As a firm advocate for collaboration and cooperation in research and service delivery, the NSSC is currently engaged in an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Coordinated Research Project (CRP) on the topic “Preventive and Protective Measures Against Insider Threats at Nuclear Facilities” with participating institutions from several countries across the world. This research seeks to focus on the identification and development of risk assessment methodologies for assessing insider threats at nuclear facilities and their mitigation.
In the medium to long term, the Centre aspires to build capacity and offer training in the areas of cyber security and nuclear forensics.
