The Environmental Resources Research Centre (ERRC) is a scientific partner in environmental safety and regulatory compliance. We provide critical data to national agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), and Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), to enforce regulations and protect public health.

Our laboratories monitor air, water, and soil quality to identify emerging pollutants, provide evidence-based insights to detect violations, guide health interventions, and evaluate the success of environmental remediation.

Vision

To be the trusted national and regional partner in environmental testing, research, and innovation, driving solutions for a safer and healthier environment.

Mission

To develop innovative solutions for emerging pollutants, provide trusted testing services, and support national agencies in safeguarding public health and the environment.

Core Functions

  • Provide specialised analysis to support national agencies (EPA, FDA, GSA, and others) in enforcing environmental standards.
  • Detect Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and emerging environmental threats using advanced methodologies.
  • Serve as a primary reference centre for rare environmental hazards and rapid-response situations.
  • Strengthen national capacity by offering cost-effective, shared laboratory resources to identify uncommon or emerging environmental risks.
  • Support environmental remediation through routine and specialised testing to guide the cleanup and restoration of contaminated ecosystems.

 Impact and Achievements

  • Participated in the WHO/UNEP human milk survey, contributing data for 82 countries, including Ghana, over the past 20 years.
  • Implemented phase two of the Global Monitoring Plan in 2016 onwards, covering 42 countries across Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Analysed legacy and newly listed Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), including emerging pollutants such as Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) and chlorinated paraffins (CPs).
  • Introduced water quality monitoring, measuring Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concentrations in 22 countries.
  • Filled critical data gaps for developing countries, including Ghana, to evaluate the effectiveness of the Stockholm Convention.

Explore our transformative contributions.

We provide testing of ambient and indoor air; analyse dust and wipe samples; assess surface water, drinking water, and sediments; and examine fish and shellfish.

We test pharmaceuticals, drugs, consumer products, foods, and beverages, including bottled water.

We conduct biomonitoring and chemical agent testing through the analysis of urine, blood, and human breast milk.

We perform analytical detection and quantification of carbamate, chlorinated, and organophosphate pesticides; pyrethroid pesticide metabolites; chlorinated acid herbicides; polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs); heavy and trace metals; semi-volatile and volatile organic compounds; polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs); melamine and cyanuric acid; non-metallic inorganics; nutrients; chlorophyll; particulate matter (PM2.5); bases, neutrals, and acids; and inorganic demand parameters.
