The Nuclear Applications Centre (NAC) is a Centre under the National Nuclear Research Institute (NNRI) that focuses on applying nuclear science and technology to practical problems in industry, health, and environmental monitoring. It conducts research, training, and service delivery in radiotracer techniques, non-destructive testing (NDT), radon monitoring, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and environmental monitoring of air and noise.
Vision
To be the leading centre of excellence in research, innovation, application of radiotracer technology, non-destructive testing (NDT), radon monitoring, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and environmental monitoring of air and noise, dedicated to safeguarding the welfare, safety, and sustainable development of Ghanaians and the Sub-Region.
Mission
To conduct ground-breaking research and deliver reliable services in radiotracer technology, solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD), non-destructive testing (NDT), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and environmental monitoring of Air Quality and Noise, safeguarding communities while fostering innovation and regional development.
Core Functions
- Conduct applied and collaborative research in radiotracer techniques, non-destructive testing (NDT), solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and environmental monitoring to advance knowledge and improve industrial processes.
- Deliver specialised nuclear-based services to industry, government, and communities, including:
- Radiotracer applications for troubleshooting and process optimisation.
- Non-destructive testing (NDT) for structural integrity and safety assurance.
- XRF analysis for material characterisation and quality control.
- Environmental monitoring of air and noise to protect public health.
- Radiation dosimetry and monitoring using SSNTD for occupational and environmental safety.
- Provide professional training, workshops, and technical support to build expertise in nuclear applications for scientists, engineers, and technicians in Ghana and across the Sub-Region.
- Work with industry, academia, and international organisations to expand nuclear applications, share knowledge, and promote sustainable development.
Impact and Achievements
- Conducted NDT UT thickness testing on about 90 LPG tanks annually, including fixed installations and bulk road vehicles, to reduce leaks, fires, ensure compliance, and protect public safety.
- Provided over 30 years of NDT services to 20+ companies in the mining, petroleum, oil & gas, and manufacturing sectors, ensuring the safety and integrity of critical infrastructure.
- Monitored air quality and noise for around 10 industries annually across Ghana and West Africa to protect public health and the environment while ensuring compliance.
- Developed Ghana’s first radon map through radon gas monitoring to identify high-risk areas and raise awareness of health risks and mitigation needs.
Learn More About Our Work
- We conduct non-destructive testing services, including radiographic inspection, penetrant testing, visual inspection, magnetic particle inspection, ultrasonic flaw detection, ultrasonic thickness testing, thickness mapping, and corrosion assessment.
- We undertake welding inspection to ensure weld quality and compliance with standards.
- We perform coating inspection to verify surface preparation and coating performance.
- We provide training in NDT techniques and welding to build local technical capacity.
- We deliver third-party inspection services for non-destructive testing to support independent quality assurance.
- We offer after-market NDT services, including equipment rental
- We provide hydrostatic pressure testing for pressure vessels and piping systems.
- We provide advanced process analysis (radiotracer services) such as flow rate measurement, leakage detection, interface and level detection (oil and gas products), distillation column scanning, and troubleshooting and optimisation of industrial systems using residence time distribution.
- We provide air quality (ambient and indoor monitoring), radon monitoring, stack emission monitoring, dispersion modelling, noise monitoring, and acoustic modelling solutions.
- We conduct comprehensive inspections of LPG pressure vessels and ancillaries, including thickness gauging, safety relief valve checks, temperature and pressure gauge verification, discharge line testing, cathodic testing, and pressure testing.
