The National Data Centre serves as a national facility and part of an international network that monitors and verifies nuclear test explosions in support of global peace and security. We collate and analyse seismic, hydroacoustic, infrasound, and radionuclide data from the international data centre in Vienna, Austria, for treaty verification purposes. Beyond treaty verification, we also apply geophysical survey techniques to support groundwater exploration and development, geotechnical investigations for the design and construction of engineering structures, and environmental studies, while providing technical advice and scientific support to national authorities involved in the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) verification, including representation at the United Nations Executive Council.

Vision

To be a centre of excellence in nuclear test monitoring and geophysical sciences in Ghana and beyond, contributing to global peace, security, and sustainable development through data analysis and scientific collaboration.

Mission

To receive, collect, process, analyse, report, and archive data from the International Monitoring System (IMS) and related networks, providing credible scientific information and technical expertise to support nuclear test-ban verification, civil applications, and societal benefit.

Core Functions

  • Collate and analyse seismic, hydroacoustic, infrasound, and radionuclide data to monitor nuclear explosion events for treaty verification.
  • Receive and utilise seismic data from the International Data Centre (Vienna) and neighbouring countries.
  • Provide technical advice and support on Treaty verification to the national authority’s representatives at the UN Executive Council.
  • Analyse IMS monitoring data on natural or man-made events for civil and scientific benefit.
  • Build strategic partnerships with national and international bodies to maximise benefits from the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) monitoring system.

Impact and Achievements

  • Held a regional training program for African national data centres affiliated with the CTBTO in 2010 at the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS).
  • Delivered skills-boosting training and mentoring to national service personnel and interns, enhancing capacity in CTBT-related activities and STEM careers for early-career women.
  • Facilitated the arrival of the CTBTO Executive Secretary in Ghana in June 2024, supporting multi-country engagement across West Africa and promoting nuclear-test monitoring initiatives.
  • Created an awareness of the CTBT and its relevance to Ghana and the global security architecture in 2024.

Learn More About Our Work

  • We conduct feasibility studies for water supply to ensure sustainable and efficient systems.
  • We provide consultancy services for groundwater exploration, including drilling supervision, installation of hand pump concrete pads, and associated works.
  • We carry out archaeological site investigations to ensure informed development planning.
  • We identify and evaluate fissures and fracture zones in rocks to inform geotechnical and hydrogeological planning.
  • We perform quarry evaluation studies to assess the suitability and quality of construction materials.
  • We conduct groundwater pollution studies to support environmental protection and sustainable use of the groundwater.
  • We map and delineate disused refuse dumping sites for safe land reclamation and planning.
  • We carry out engineering geophysical surveys as part of geotechnical investigations to inform design and construction decisions.
  • We conduct outreach programmes that promote the banning of nuclear weapons and advocate for the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
